Hovercraft services from Niagara to Toronto are one step closer to becoming a reality.
Hoverlink, a startup aiming to provide trips from the two destinations in 30 minutes across Lake Ontario, announced Thursday that it has secured a docking agreement in Toronto Harbour.
This comes after an announcement last year that a location has been secured in Niagara, a project that is now shovel-ready, according to the company.
Hoverlink says it can make up to 48 lake crossings per day, with up to 180 passengers per craft – running 18 hours per day, all while claiming 98% less emissions compared to traveling by car or bus. This could result in over 8000 less vehicles on the highway per day, according to the company.
The company also says the hovercrafts are quieter, and do no harm to marine life or shorelines.
The high-speed crafts are the first of their kind in North America, and would be the first ever large-scale hovercraft transit route in the continent.
